Helping Patients Decrease Serum Glucose Levels

Mark Hyman, MD

In his book, The Blood Sugar Solution, Dr. Mark Hyman provides a detailed program for controlling serum glucose levels as soon as they are clinically detected. Primary care providers are on the front line for identifying these patients in the course of the annual physical, and they are ideally placed among healthcare providers to intervene before progression to diabetes begins. The usual medical nutrition therapy (MNT) to control blood sugar levels generally includes consumption of a variety of nutritious foods in moderate amounts and adherence to regular mealtimes. This simple approach may not be comprehensive or detailed enough for many prediabetic patients. Here, Dr. Hyman explains the specific elements of his program and how they can be implemented to help patients avoid the downstream complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the patient’s need for lifelong care and medication regimens. His program also has benefits for patients already diagnosed with T2DM, and in the process of following it, patients who adhere to this 6-week program can improve their daily nutrition, lose extra body weight, decrease inflammation, and increase energy metabolism.
