Practical Endocrinology and Diabetes in Children, 3rd Ed.

Authors: Joseph E. Raine, Malcolm D. C. Donaldson, J.W. Gregory, Guy Van-Vliet

Dr Guy Van Vliet, one of the authors of Practical Endocrinology and Diabetes in Children, gives an overview of their very useful book for the busy clinician audience. For the primary care physician, height and weight charts remain critical for the assessment of a child’s growth and assessment of possible endocrine disorders such as Turner syndrome, which has a prevalence of ~1:2500 girls; the book contains a supplement section including charts, reference material and handouts. Dr Van Vliet discusses how physician and community education and awareness programs can make valuable contributions to identifying when children have endocrine disorders, including diabetes. Dr Van Vliet also reviews the impact of molecular genetics techniques on the field of pediatric endocrinology that have improved clinical diagnostics over the last fifteen years.
